2:30 p.m.-6:30 p.m. After School The Research Research shows that high quality out-of-school education opportunities can greatly aid in narrowing the STEM academic achievement gap for at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth. Recently President Barak Obama appointed an advisory group of the nation's leading scientists and engineers (President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology). In their report to the President, PCAST made the following conclusion: "Opportunities to learn STEM(science, technology, engineering and math) outside of school are especially important for members of groups underrepresented in science and engineering, including girls, African-Americans, and Hispanics. As early as elementary school and middle school, many students from these groups begin to think that they will not or cannot excel at STEM. These messages sap the natural interest and lower the performance of groups underrepresented in STEM fields. Out of class activities can counter these messages by showing students that they can succeed at STEM and that STEM is not reserved for certain types of students." Not only do high quality out-of-school opportunities yield academic benefits, but they also contribute greatly to the overall health and welfare of children. According to a 2010 report by Child Trends (a nonprofit, nonpartisan research center that studies children at all stages of development) , "adolescents in high-quality (out-of-school) programs were more likely to avoid risky behavior, to have better performance in school, and to have greater social competence, over and above the control variables, than those in no program."
